Widely publicized Mermaid Parade in Brooklyn is celebrating its 30th anniversary!
Deserving honorable mention (2nd place after SF Castro Street Fair), the event, with the nod from the city fathers, aimed at rejuvenation of this long neglected NYC’s most popular shoreline.
Mermaid Parade claims heritage from a century old Mardi Gras, sank into oblivion near Coney Island shore with Moses’s (*) re-zoning to accommodate low income housing projects in 60’s.
Coney Island Dancers (C.I.D.) is a prominent figure of the festivities.
Not too long ago this underground organization with, apparently, tainted reputation shifted its course chiefly under the commandment of the Commander-in-chief Vargas. Nowadays “looking for no glory other than the well-being of the community”, C.I.D. plays in unison in the chorus of various area renaissance programs.
